Ashtown Mini bike cup report 19/9/09

1st round report

After dragging the sound system, Gazebo and BBQ out into the garden, the stage was set for a fine mini bike session in Ashtown, Dublin. The newly built track weaved between trees in dusty conditions and out into open field for some flat out grassy turns.

The riders spent most of the morning getting in some practice before the racing took place. The track began to transform after every few laps with so many bikes on course, revealing some interesting new lines! After some tasty burgers, red lemonade and a few dodgy looks over my iPod track selection! we got down to some serious racing. With a top prize of €10,000 giant cheque, trophy and a bottle of bucky up for grabs we were guaranteed some dirty racing action.

As all riders were running Xsport bikes, it was an even playing field. Starting on a straight, it was a 100m drag race to the first corner. Second gear take offs were the order of the day with a few stalls and a few wheelies here and there. Peter Popham had his race starts dialled as he pulled an early lead in almost every race. Jamie Popham, Ger Wolfe and Earl Mcleanaghan were soon buzzing on peters back wheel dicing for positions. After a few rounds of equal handicap, Jamie took most wins.

We decided to run a handicap system towards the end of the day which provided some real tight racing and good battles with Tom Clougher and Peter Popham.

There were plenty of spectators eager for a go on the bikes which led to a newbie race at the end of the day. Full of stalls, crashes and close racing, this was most entertaining race of the day. I think xsport sold a few bikes after that race.
